A team from ICT University wins 3rd price at STEMPRIZE 2018 for their project MediQuick: Mobile Application to Ease Access to Healthcare Information.
The team of Christian KOUESSO, Marco Bessom, Batibonak Abia and Joan Massock, all students from The ICT University, has been awarded the 3rd prize at the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Prize Award 2018. The happy ending ceremony of this edition of STEM Prize took place at S.T. Muna Foundation, Yaoundé, on December 8, 2018.
With their project entitled MediQuick: Mobile Application to Ease Access to Healthcare Information; this team participated to a 3 day training on Entrepreneurship at Foretia Foundation from December 5 to December 7, 2018. This training program was offered before the closing ceremony for the 5 finalists’ team among 48 projects submitted and reviewed by a panel of (3) evaluators, non-affiliated to the Foundation and two (2) evaluators working for the Foundation.
About MediQuick
MediQuick is a mobile app designed to bring healthcare information and experts assistance closer to the population; and therefore, improve patient engagement as to what concerns prevention, detection and management of less serious or chronic diseases at home.
In our Cameroon context, MediQuick tries to solve three major problems, which are: difficulties to book appointment due to the lack of information (location, contact, specializations) on health care centers; lack of knowledge on health tips and first aid tips and difficulties to receive trusted recommendations and assistance for basic cases.
We try to reduce the mortality rate, cost and time of healing procedures by providing three main solutions that are: provision of necessary info about Healthcare centers by proximity and specialty, with ability to book appointments; provision of Health Tips and A System to get Doctor’s assistance.
This mobile application provides a Unique Value Proposition by bringing health to the patient’s pocket. This is because many health cases do not require the need to go to a hospital, or would not have required if the patient was assisted early. Many patients fail to reach the right health center on time because of lack of information.
MediQuick uses Artificial Intelligence to provide the exact, most explicit and trustful information, in the suitable form through the suitable canal in a timely manner, so that anyone, even if he or she is considered as “illiterate”, can navigate it. We target anyone with access to a mobile phone with internet, either personal or familial, since good Health is a necessity to every human being.
About the STEM Prize
The STEM Prize [https://stemprize.org/] was established by the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation [https://www.foretiafoundation.org/], to encourage young Cameroonians and Africans, especially girls and young women to pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This competition brings together young scholars from both secondary and tertiary schools, between the ages of 13 and 21, to design projects that have the greatest potential of positively changing their communities. A total of 5 million FCFA is dedicated to support winning projects.
