ICT University Student Ambassador honored by Point of Light Awards

Commonwealth Point of Light 205. Xaviera Nguefo Kowo

Xaviera Nguefo Kowo, representing Cameroon, aged 18, is a computer science student who has developed a robot that disposes of litter left in public spaces at a quicker speed than manual labour.

Xaviera was inspired to develop the robot to help combat the huge amounts of waste in Cameroon’s major cities, and consequently improve sanitation for urban communities. An innovative solution to waste treatment, Xaviera’s robot is equipped with wheels for quick mobility and is capable of automatically processing any material left in its path by transporting it to a specific area, such as a rubbish bin or recycling centre.

Xaviera said:

“An education in STEM gave me the opportunity to contribute to one of the most challenging societal issues, which is environmental pollution. Taking action gave me a substantial vision towards my community, my continent and the world. I look forward to working with a team of like-minded individuals to nurture the project and have it gain greater impact. Getting recognition from the Points of Light Award is proof my work is not going unnoticed and this gives me momentum to keep going and be grateful. To all the other youths, there is so much potential that comes out when we get out of our comfort zones.”

Nigel Holmes, Deputy British High Commissioner to Cameroon, said:

“Congratulations Xaviera. You are an inspiring young programmer. What most impresses me is that you have identified a real need in society around her and has created an innovative solution. In this year of COP26, and with our growing global focus on the climate change emergency, it is ideas such as these that will help the world mitigate and adapt to climate change. I hope your example, of a young woman working in STEM areas, motivates others to follow. We look forward to hosting you for an award ceremony in early 2022.”
